This morning's Miami Herald reports newly re-elected Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones will be charged with theft. There had been speculation and rumors of her impending arrest but some details have now been made public and the situation is not pretty.
Spence-Jones has beaten other charges in the past but this case appears stronger as she is accused of forging the approval of her mentor, former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Carey-Shuler, to secure funds for a family business and personal use.
Will Spence-Jones really fight these latest charges or will she go away quietly a la Angel Gonzalez? If her remarks at her swearing in are any indication, she's not going down without a fight. She invoked God and nappy headness into her very defiant remarks. She also named several other local black politicians and President Obama as she whipped the crowd into a frenzy.
These situations with Commissioners Ganzalez and Spence-Jones are both very interesting and very sad. In the midst of this mayhem and foolishness, it's important to not lose focus on the people and the government's responsibility to them us. Stay tuned.
