“Schnellenberger marched purposefully into Miami neighborhoods torn apart by race riots, crime, and poverty to sell his ambitious vision of a national championship to black recruits who'd never set foot in lily-white Coral Gables.” http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local-beat/An-Interview-With-The-Us-Alfred-Spellman-78482467.html
And Howard Schnellenberger was the tipping point in championship collegiate football in South Florida. For folks who remember the Canes of late, it is indeed a different crop of players than back in the day.
It will be interesting to see just how authentic the film is in capturing the transformation of UM’s football program and the impact on Miami’s black community. Even more interesting is the resistance met by the filmmakers from UM athletic staff. Don’t miss: “The U”, 9 pm, Dec. 12 on ESPN.
