Miami-Dade ranks number one in HIV and AIDS cases in the State of Florida, and within the county, Liberty City ranks first in both HIV and AIDS cases, with 8% of the population, but 20% and 18% of the reported AIDS and HIV cases, respectively. According to the Miami-Dade Health Department, 1 in 45 Black Miami-Dade residents and 1 in 179 Hispanics is living with HIV or AIDS.
In an effort to reverse these trends, during and after World AIDS Day and World AIDS Awareness Week, the Urban League of Greater Miami in collaboration with Miami-Dade Public Schools HIV/AIDS Education Program will hold two events where students attend schools in the Liberty City area will participate in educational activities designed to prevent the spread of HIV.
