Congratulations to Rachel Faust, first grade teacher at Van E. Blanton Elementary School. I don’t know what she wrote, but Ellen Degeneres (Yes, that one) and JCPenney gifted her school with $100,000. That is super incredible.
Van E. Blanton is in my neighborhood. Most of the students at Van E. Blanton come from households whose income is below the poverty line. One use for the money will be to provide the students with a playground. My mother was a Phys Ed teacher on that very field Ms. Faust spoke of. It does look very much the same as it has for the last forty years that we’ve lived here.

In spite of the poverty and needs of the students at Van E. Blanton Elementary School, it is an “A” school. The students have consistently performed well on state mandated tests and the school is highly rated. That is a testament to the students, administration, faculty, staff and parents.
