Several hundred people gathered at Ives Estate Park for the I Am Trayvon Day of Remembrance Peace Walk at Ives Estate Park near the Dade-Broward countyline and Dr. Michael Krop Senior High School. Several hundred people gathered for the walk and more came in time for the speakers. Most were looking forward to hearing Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx.
Rev. Dr. Jamal Harrison-Bryant, an unexpected speaker to many in attendance, fired up the crowd as he touched on many topics centered on uplift, family and education. Jamie Foxx spoke on the Trayvon Martin situation and reflected on how he would feel as a father if he lost a child. He didn’t plan on making a statement about Trayvon Martin but after he saw Trayvon’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, at the NAACP Image Awards , he was moved to speak out on the issue.
Various community leaders and media personalities were also on hand: State Rep. Cynthia Stafford; County Commissioner Barbara Jordan; School Board Member Wilbert ‘Tee’ Holloway; Shelby Rushin; Lorenzo ‘Ice Tea’ Thomas, Felisha Monet and Former Metro-Dade Police Chief Robert Parker.
Representatives from various fraternal organizations were present including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; the Masons and Eastern Stars.
The weekend continues with the We Remember Trayvon Inaugural Remembrance Dinner tomorrow at the Doubletree Miami Airport.
