This morning we honor the memory of Miami Gardens teen Trayvon Martin with a weekend of peace and remembrance. Trayvon was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in Sanford, FL as Trayvon returned from a convenience store with an Arizona Iced Tea and a bag of Skittles. Zimmerman said he shot Trayvon in self-defense. He also said Trayvon attacked him. There was international outrage when Sanford Police did not arrest Zimmerman for the shooting. Trayvon Martin would have been 18 years old on this past Tuesday, February 5.
Academy Award winning actor Jamie Foxx, comedian Cedric the Entertainer and other celebrities will be on hand for the “I Am Trayvon Martin” Day of Remembrance Peace Walk this morning at 10, Ives Estates Park on 209th Street and northeast 16th avenue near Madie Ives Elementary School. There’s also a ‘We Remember Traycon” Inaugural Remembrance Dinner at 6pm on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the Doubletree at the Miami Airport Hilton.
There will be entertainment and food at the Peace Walk and that event is free. Proceeds from the Dinner will benefit the Trayvon Martin Foundation.
