Is it just me or does anyone else think this could be the perfect billboard for South Florida?

Donnie_Mosses

I don't know the backstory to this graphic but it must be interesting. I'm going to post it on the side bar of this blog and whenever it needs to be posted as a reminder to this community.

There has been coverage of local public corruption recently but it is likely only the tip of the iceberg. Who's really kidding who? Some folks have been caught in the web while others are likely still shaking in their boots.

To the winner of the upcoming City of Miami Commission races for Districts 1 & 5 and to all sitting elected officials and others responsible for allocating and spending public resources, let this commandment reverberate in your conscious in the upcoming year. Forget that classic billboard with the little girl and the dog on the beach in that Coppertone suntan lotion ad.

THOU SHALT NOT PIMP THE COMMUNITY IN 2010!

Mayor Regalado questions hiring practices on Marlins Stadium project

Regalado Workers

If you recall all the hoopla about the Marlins Stadium construction, there are concerns about the number of jobs promised from the project. New Mayor Tomas Regalado is calling on the inspector general to investigate. Check this out:

Miami Today: Mayor Regalado protests what he calls lack of local jobs on Florida Marlins ballpark construction

By Risa Polansky

Proponents pitched constructing a new, retractable-roof Marlins ballpark as a local jobs generator. As the largely publicly funded stadium rises on the site of the old Orange Bowl in Little Havana, Miami's new mayor says he's not seeing it in practice. (Read more...)

Kwanzaa Celebration in Miami

The Miami-Dade Chapter of the Florida A&M University National Alumni Association in partnership with Community Builders Holistic Development Corporation, presented a magnificent celebration at the Blessed Catering Banquet Hall in Liberty City to kick-off The seven-day celebration, Kwanzaa.

This is the 20th year the Miami-Dade Chapter has celebrated Kwanzaa with the Greater Miami community. Understanding the importance of celebrating faith, family and culture, the organization's event has grown from a celebration in a member's home to public venues with feasts of various delicacies.

The event was very relaxed with audience participation from attendees of all ages and various ethnic groups. Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community and Culture

Kwanzaa

Starting yesterday and over seven days, many people throughout the world will celebrate Kwanzaa. Based on seven principles, the Nguzo Saba, Kwanzaa is designed to strengthen the black family, thus strengthening the community.

From www.tike.com:

Kwanzaa is a unique African-American celebration with focus on the traditional African values of family, community responsibility, commerce, and self-improvement. Kwanzaa is neither political nor religious and despite some misconceptions, is not a substitute for Christmas. It is simply a time of reaffirming African-American people, their ancestors and culture. Kwanzaa, which means "first fruits of the harvest" in the African language Kiswahili, has gained tremendous acceptance. Since its founding in 1966, Kwanzaa has come to be observed by more than18 million people worldwide, as reported by the New York Times.

There are seven candles in the kinara: 3 red, 1 black and 3 green. Starting with the black candle in the center and alternating red and green, each day, starting on December 26, a candle is lit and at a gathering of family and friends, a principle is discussed.

NGUZO SABA
(The Seven Principles)

Umoja (Unity)
To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.

Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.

Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
To build and maintain our community together and make our brother's and sister's problems our problems and to solve them together.

Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.

Nia (Purpose)
To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.

Kuumba (Creativity)
To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

Imani (Faith)
To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

Kwanzaa is not just a seven-day celebration but a way of life. Life and practice the seven principles throughout the year to strengthen ourselves, our family and our community. Harambee'!

City commission vote in best interest of the people?

African square park

Check out this Miami New Times article on the City of Miami Commission's vote to use vacant land on 61st street and NW 14th avenue for residential units in rejection of the planning board's recommendation of expansion of African Square Park: New Miami City Commission Fails First Green Test.

This vote is a perfect example of why that district needs effective representation and not someone beholden to developers.

In a city where there are already far too many vacant residential units, building more is questionable at best. District 5 residents need to be vigilant and express their opinion about their area or they will awake one day to find it's no longer theirs.

Development should also be a question asked of the latest crop of candidates seeking the District 5 seat on the City Commission.

UPDATE: 17 year-old arrested in assault of 9 year-old boy at Sunview Park

Rumaldo Frometa The Broward Sheriff's Office arrested 17-year-old Rumaldo Frometa in the sexual assault of the 9 year-old boy at Sunview Park in fort Lauderdale. Frometa raped the boy in a portable bathroom while the boy's 7 year-old sister waited outside.

Frometa gained the children's trust by impersonating a police officer. Other neighborhood children helped police in apprehending him. He will be charged with capital sexual battery, kidnapping and falsely impersonating a police officer.

Prayerfully, the boy and his family will recive counseling to help them deal with this horrific situation. It's been reported that Frometa committed a similar crime last year. He needs help too.

Although Frometa is a juvenile, he could be tried as an adult. Stay tuned.

Politics gets nasty between Diaz de la Portilla brothers and Robaina

Political flap, investigation over Renier Diaz de la Portilla mailer

By MARC CAPUTO

Miami-Dade School Board member Renier Diaz de la Portilla is under investigation for allegedly skirting bidding rules to pay for a mailer that could help his brother in a political campaign to succeed their other sibling as state senator.

Renier Diaz de la Portilla said the mailer, approved by a School Board lawyer, was legitimate and that the investigation launched by the county's inspector general was ``politically motivated.'' It stemmed from a complaint made by Miguel Diaz de la Portilla's campaign opponent, Julio Robaina.

Robaina, a Republican like the three brothers and currently a state representative, says the mailer was akin to a taxpayer-funded campaign piece because it targeted reliable Republican voters in the senate district.
