Revenue from red-light cameras to bolster local government budgets

Drivers in Miami-Dade County had better beware that local governments are implementing red-light cameras to ticket drivers that commit traffic infractions. No worries about a police officer turning on his siren and pulling you over; a picture of the car committing the infraction will be sent to the owner, not necessarily the driver, along with a bill for $158.

All of this is being done in the name of public safety but the government anticipates receiving $75 of the $158 penalty. Pay higher taxes or pay penalties but you will pay.

Surely there will be challenges to these cameras and the tickets. Stay tuned.

Perrine Residents Up In Arms Over Senseless Killing

From The South Dade Monitor:

Perrine protest No Justice! No Peace! Seven cents, don’t make no sense! What are we going to do? Shut them down! We won’t buy here, we won’t shop here, hey, hey, hey good bye.

These are the ongoing chants voiced by scores of emotional, passionate and inspirational residents of Perrine in their continuous plight for justice after the brutal slaying of a well known resident that occurred on the 18th of November. A day after the incident occurred, and for more than 23 consecutive days, more than 200 relentless protesters made up of community activists, pastors and everyday people mounted a boycott in front of the place where the murder took place. It was a Quick Stop Convenience Store located at 9720 SW 168th Street in Perrine, FL. The store reopened for business, but faces the force of a massive assembly of residents that has vowed to shut the store down and they have no intent of going anywhere until it happens.

This unprecedented boycott was sparked by what many of Perrine residents say was the brutal and senseless murder of Akil Larue Oliver (34), a prominent and aspiring young man of the community. It has been reported that the incident took place over seven cents. Tempers flared and tension quickly escalated to an exchange of insults and slurs.
