MDC North Campus and Hispanic Scholarship Fund Host ‘College is Possible’ Town Hall Meeting and EXPO Nov. 5

A special opportunity for eligible high school seniors to complete and submit online scholarship applications in hi-tech computer courtyard with individualized assistance

Miami, FL – For the third consecutive year, Miami Dade College (MDC) and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) will join hands to bring a wealth of scholarship, financial aid and college admission information to middle and high school students and their parents. The College is Possible Scholarship Town Hall and College EXPO will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 from 8 a.m. to noon at MDC’s North Campus. The event will feature special workshops about financial aid and scholarships and a college fair where attendees will learn about career and educational options, including how to apply and pay for college.

A special highlight of the event will be the first-ever on-the-spot scholarship submission opportunity for eligible 12th graders who are interested in being considered for an HSF scholarship as well as an MDC American Dream Scholarship. Two sessions will be offered for this on-line scholarship submission track:  8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

“The attainment of a college degree should be a matter of course for every single person in our nation,” said Dr. Jose A. Vicente, president of MDC’s North Campus. “MDC’s North Campus is proud to serve as HSF’s local higher education partner in engendering a consciousness about the importance of college completion in the hearts and minds of all in our community.”

The event is particularly important because even with Miami-Dade County’s large and diverse Hispanic population, South Florida continues to be underrepresented on the list of HSF scholarship recipients. HSF is the nation's leading Hispanic scholarship organization, providing the Hispanic community more college scholarships and educational outreach support than any other organization in the country. In its 36-year history, HSF has awarded more than $280 million dollars in scholarships to more than 90,000 students in need. Two-thirds of these students are the first in their families to attend college.

Registration for the event is required by calling 305-237-1149. Sponsored by FedEx, the event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Seats are quickly filling.
