M-DCPS school bond issue on agenda at NAN meeting
Saturday, September 15, 2012
Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto
Carvalho is on the agenda of the September 17, 2012 meeting of the Miami-Dade Chapter
of NAN (National Action Network) lead by Bishop Victor T. Curry. Superintendent Carvalho will discuss the $1.2
billion bond referendum on the November ballot. The bond dollars will be used to upgrade the County's crumbling public schools.
Many voters have already chosen sides as supporters or opposition. Those opposing the bond issue cite increased taxes and a history of mismanagement of construction dollars. In particular in the black community, the overwhelming support of the black community for the1988 bond issue, saw most of those bond dollars used for schools outside of the black community. It is also important to note that those opposing the bond issue have not been very vocal nor have they formed an organized effort. Superintendent Carvalho has already obtained buy in from community leaders that represent Miami-Dade County’s diverse citizenry.
