Hispanic Heritage Month: José Griñan

Jose Grinan
Former local newscaster José Griñan of WCKT-TV, now WSVN-TV, is of Cuban descent.

If you were in South Florida during the 1980’s you remember the dapper WCKT (now WSVN) news anchor, José Griñan. A well-respected journalist, the Tampa native was a calming and informative voice during the McDuffie riots. He is apparently still delivering the news elsewhere without the drama we’ve come to expect from current news anchors.

So So Much Sadness

It appears the remains of missing UF student Christian Aguilar may have been found in an isolated area east of Cedar Key. Aguilar’s friend and Doral Academy classmate Pedro Bravo and admitted to beating Aguilar and leaving him without medical care.

Three construction workers died and one is still missing in the partial collapse of the parking garage at the West Campus of Miami Dade College in Doral. The five-story structure was set to open in December. OSHA and other authorities are investigating. Classes have been moved to other locations.

Coral Reef High School student Christian Valdes died unexpectedly due to meningoccocal meningitis. Parents have been notified and asked to seek medical care for their child if symptoms arise.  Health authorities advise this death is not to be confused with recently reported deaths due to fungal meningitis.

Let’s pray for everyone impacted by these situations. Amen.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Lola Falana

Lola Falana
Loletha Elaine "Lola" Falana born September 11, 1942 in Camden, New Jersey is an American singer, dancer, and actress of Cuban descent.

Lola Falana's father left Cuba to become a welder in the United States, where he met his wife. Falana spent most of her childhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By the age of three she was dancing, and by age five she was singing in the church choir. By the time she was in junior high school, she was already dancing in nightclubs to which she was escorted by her mother. Pursuing a musical career became so important to Falana that, against her parents' wishes, she left Germantown High School a few months before graduation and moved to New York City.
