Miami Gardens, FL - Florida Memorial University’s (FMU) Computer Science, Mathematics and Technology program recently earned accreditation by ABET (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc.) The accreditation is valid through 2014. According to the organization’s records, FMU is one of the nation’s few historically black institutions to earn the designation.

“FMU offers a nurturing and rigorous environment that promotes excellence and fosters opportunity for its students,” said Ben Wongsaroj, Ph.D., program chair. “This accreditation validates the credibility and competitiveness of our program.”

ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization that accredits college and university programs in the disciplines of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology. FMU received official notification from ABET following an extensive process that started in 2010 and included a site visit by education and industry experts. Wongsaroj said that the designation gives program graduates an additional competitive advantage.

“All students who graduate from ABET-accredited programs are allowed to take state professional exams to earn various engineer licenses, further increasing their marketability,” he added.

Nearly all program faculty members have doctorates. The school confers bachelor degrees in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems and Management Information Systems. Many students and graduates secure internships and employment in the public and private sectors.
