Miami-Dade County Mayor presents Archbishop Curley Notre Dame student with Unstoppable Scholar Award

Miami, FL__On December 3, 2013, Tracey Dominique, a 10th grade student at Archbishop Curley Notre DamePrep, was presented the “Unstoppable Scholar” award by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. Tracey is a resident of Miami-Dade Commissioner, Audrey M. Edmonson’s District 3.
Tracey relocated to Miami from Haiti at the age of eight. She distinguished herself academically while learning a second language and adapting to a new culture. At ACND, she participates in the Knightingales Choir and Knights for Life – a school service group which has provided her with an opportunity to learn how advocacy can promote positive change and the importance of civic engagement.
Identifying a tremendous need for children living in an orphanage in Haiti, Tracey organized a fundraising campaign, which targeted Catholic churches and relief agencies, and put together a packet asking for donations. Ultimately, she raised over $6,600 which funded a summer camp for the orphanage. In addition, she also volunteered at a summer camp last year at her former school, St. Mary’s Cathedral School. Striving to give back to the school she feels gave her so much, she continues to serve as a mentor for younger children.
Tracey hopes to be a pediatrician in order to help children by saving lives and giving back to the community that welcomed her as a child.
About the Mayor’s Shining Scholars Awards:
In September, 2013, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez launched the Mayor’s Shining Scholars Awards highlighting local young achievers. As part of Actively Investing in Miami-Dade – the A.I.M. Initiative –, the Mayor’s Shining Scholars Awards aims to showcase the talented young people in our community by recognizing those students who strive to improve themselves and achieve more.
Each month, one student will be selected for each of the following awards: “The Pursuer of Excellence,” “The Unstoppable Scholar,” and “The Emerging Leader.” High school students from public, private, and charter schools throughout Miami-Dade County are eligible for nomination.
