Registration for the spring 2011 mini-term is underway and summer enrollment begins on March 7, 2011

Toney1 “The Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center, now entering its 21st year, was created to support entrepreneurs,” said H. Leigh Toney, executive director of the Center. “And now, more than ever, we are reaching out to entrepreneurs to provide them with the support needed to reinvent their businesses, increase their competitiveness, and be prepared for success in this dynamic economic.”

The Meek Center serves more than 3,500 students annually and is the hub for the College’s entrepreneurial activities. “The country is telling entrepreneurs to reinvent themselves and to focus on innovation and in order to help them, the Meek Center is rolling out many special programs customized for entrepreneurs,” said Dr. Jose A. Vicente, president, MDC North Campus.

Wells Fargo Urban Microentrepreneurs Initiative

President Barack Obama’s 2011 State of the Union address highlighted the story of the Allen Brothers. Robert and Gary Allen are brothers who run a small Michigan roofing company. Hit hard by the recession, half of their factory space was idle. The brothers could either limp along with non-revenue generating space, or they could take another approach. They chose the latter and with the help of a government loan, their formerly empty space was transformed to begin the manufacturing of solar shingles that are being sold across the country. In Robert’s words, “We reinvented ourselves.”

Reinvention is the focus of the Miami Dade College Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center’s Urban Microentrepreneurs Initiative, a new partnership with Wells Fargo. A $30,000 contribution from the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation will be utilized to grow future entrepreneurs, to support existing entrepreneurs in reinventing their businesses with a focus on innovation, and to partner with business support and research organizations and Chambers of Commerce to provide more strategic services to their business constituents.

“As strong supporters of our communities and their financial success, we’re pleased to partner with Miami Dade College and its Micro entrepreneur Initiative,” said Kathryn Dinkin, Wachovia’s Southeast Florida regional president. “As the No. 1 small business lender in Florida, Wachovia is confident that with the right tools, South Florida’s entrepreneurs will build a successful tomorrow.”

The Urban Microentrepreneurs Initiative (UMI), housed at the Meek Center, targets three core groups:

The Future: UMI will partner with Miami Edison Senior High School to train and support high school students in the basics of entrepreneurship. Selected students will enroll in college entrepreneurship courses that teach the basics of marketing, management, entrepreneurship and e-commerce. A small number of students will be selected for “start-up” grants to help them launch businesses.

The Doers: Open to eligible MDC students and small business owners in the Liberty City, Little Haiti and Brownsville/Gladeview communities, UMI will provide training and consultation for small to mid-size businesses focused on capacity-building and strategic growth, emphasizing Green business strategies and other new market opportunities.

The Enablers: UMI will partner with business advocacy, Chambers and research organizations to help identify business development priorities and strengthen member services. In addition to customized training opportunities, participants will be eligible for scholarship funding, consultation services, prizes and other services.

Applications for the program will be available in mid-February and an advisory committee of local business owners, Chamber officials and MDC faculty members will select participants for the UMI Entrepreneurs’ Cohort at the high school and adult levels.

Malveaux A Kick-Off Reception for the UMI will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at the Meek Center featuring Dr. Julianne Malveaux, noted economist and author. Dr. Malveaux is also president of Bennett College, a Historically Black College and University, in North Carolina. Dr. Malveaux will be signing her latest book, Surviving and Thriving: 365 Facts in Black Economic History.

MDC Students Awarded Academic Scholarships for Community Service Work in AmeriCorps Program

Eighty-seven student mentors and volunteers will receive as much $2,000 for their work in the community

Miami, FL – More than 80 Miami Dade College (MDC) students who work as mentors and volunteers for a variety of charitable causes will receive academic scholarships as a result of an $111,970 federal grant from the Florida Campus Compact (FL/CC) AmeriCorps Program. The federal grant was recently awarded to MDC for the sole purpose of providing scholarships and stipends to students who engage in at least 300 hours of community service. The award to MDC will be split into two programs: the FL/CC AmeriCorps Program and the Students in Service AmeriCorps Program. The student scholarships will be awarded based on the level of service, number of hours served, and the award amount.

The FL/CC AmeriCorps Program, which will be awarded to 62 MDC students, is designed for college students who serve as mentors to at-risk youth with the goal of helping their mentees gain the skills and knowledge needed for college access and success. Additionally, two out of the 62 students will be selected for leadership positions and will earn a $2,675 scholarship, a $5,200 stipend, and must commit to a minimum of 900 service hours. The remaining 60 students will receive a $1,132 scholarship when they complete their community service hours.

Twenty-five MDC students will be selected for the FL/CC Students in Service AmeriCorps Program, which supports a broader range of service opportunities beyond mentoring. The students may choose to serve in areas such as environmental protection, human services, public safety, counseling, nursing/EMT, education and more. These students will also receive a $1,132 scholarship for a minimum of 300 community service hours.

“We are very grateful to Florida Campus Compact and the AmeriCorps program because this initiative will allow 87 of MDC’s most civic-minded students to gain leadership skills, serve the community, and earn much needed college scholarships,” said Josh Young, director of MDC’s nationally acclaimed Center for Community Involvement and the lead administrator of the program.

The 87 students are currently being recruited to fill these positions and must complete their service hours by the fall of 2011. Students interested in applying for either FL/CC AmeriCorps Program must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and able to provide sufficient documentation; at least 17 years of age with no record of felony; enrolled at MDC; have a valid e-mail address; and must attend a pre-service orientation conducted at one of MDC’s eight campuses.

MDC and NSU Partner to Offer Low-Cost Dental Services to the Community

Miami, Nov. 3, 2010 – Miami Dade College (MDC) and Nova Southeastern University (NSU) are now partners in an ongoing project aimed at providing local residents low-cost dental services performed by dental students from both academic institutions once a week for the remainder of the year. The new Community Collaborative Partnership between NSU’s School of Dental Medicine and MDC’s Dental Hygiene Program officially began at the start of this fall semester.

Upper level dental students will directly treat patients at MDC’s Dental Hygiene Clinic on a one-month rotation basis, one day a week until the end of the academic year. Six students from NSU are assigned each week and approximately 24 patients will be served each day. MDC dental hygiene students will provide services such as cleanings, sealants, and X-Rays. The dental students from NSU will perform restorative care procedures such as fillings and simple tooth extractions. Program coordinators said the goal is to have the same group of students treating patients to ensure there is a continuity of care.

The services will always be offered at MDC’s Medical Center Campus on Mondays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Appointments are required and walk-ins will not be allowed. The dental services are made available at a reduced cost that is comparable to private practice fee schedules. Tooth fillings range from $48 to $100; root canals are $100 to 200; and extractions cost from $60 to $85.  To be totally accommodating to all individuals, health insurance is not necessary and services can be paid for with cash, debit or credit cards.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this desperately needed restorative dental treatment to our patients,” said Dr. Susan Kass, MDC’s dental hygiene program coordinator. She added that although the services are available to the general public, individuals must first become registered patients with the clinic before they can be served. “These services are offered to everyone. This includes adults of all ages, as well as MDC faculty, staff and students.”

The program had been in development for several months before it launched this past September at the Medical Center Campus. According to Kass, there was a growing need expressed by visiting patients to the campus clinic, as well as the uninsured families throughout the community desperately needing proper dental care, that had to be addressed. “We learned there was a great need for basic dental services by our own patients, many of whom are students and non-students from neighboring communities.”

Soon after, MDC administrators reached out to NSU to pique interest in a clinical rotation program where the institutions would share both services and patients. To get the program off the ground, MDC received both financial and in-kind support from private organizations, such as Health Foundation of South Florida and dental instrument company Hu-Friedy. Health Foundation contributed nearly $30,000 toward start-up costs and Hu-Friedy provided instruments worth in excess of $16,000.

“We are thankful for the support of these organizations, MDC and NSU administrators, and their dedication to this project and the dental hygiene program,” added Kass. “We will now be a more full-service preventive care facility for our community.”

To make an appointment at the MDC Dental Hygiene Clinic, call 305-237-4142. During the first visit, patients will be screened to determine their dental needs and will be recommended for the appropriate services.
