President of National Urban League Marc Morial Scheduled to Appear as Keynote Speaker at the Second Annual Conference
Washington, D.C.—August 2010 Blogalicious Weekend, the largest blogging conference celebrating diversity in social media, will host its second annual conference at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach in Miami, FL from October 8 to October 10, 2010. The three-day event dedicated to celebrating diversity in social media will bring together a group of savvy, influential and talented women bloggers to share ideas and inspiration in the context of Web 2.0.
Founded by Mamalaw.com bloggers, Nadia Jones, Nyasha Smith and Stacey Ferguson, Blogalicious Weekend was launched after these three practicing attorneys, who between them have seven children, realized that there was a dearth in the blogosphere when it came to the multicultural voices of women bloggers. They are also the founders of Mamalaw Media Group (MMG), a company devoted to raising the profile of women of color online.
“We believe this is an exciting opportunity to discuss the importance of blogging across ethnic communities,” says Mamalaw Media Group. “The conference will once again ignite a sense of unity within the multicultural blogging community, as well as educate marketers on the importance of our demographic in today’s marketplace, all while networking, building relationships, and promoting inspiration and success for each other.”
Blogalicious 2010 is expected to have an attendance of hundreds of social media influencers from various backgrounds. Featured workshops include Marketing to Women of Color, Building Your Social Media Tribe and The Value and Metrics of Diversity at Conferences.
Marc Morial, president of National Urban League is set to appear as one of the keynote speakers. He will speak on Sunday, October 10, at 9 a.m. The National Urban League is a historic civil rights organization dedicated to economic empowerment in order to elevate the standard of living in historically underserved urban communities. The Urban League recently celebrated its centennial in Washington, D.C.
Other speakers include Miriam Muley, The 85% Niche; Elisa Camahort Page, BlogHer, Inc.; Wayne Sutton, Social Wayne; and Dr. Otis Brawley, American Cancer Society.
Event sponsors include representatives from General Mills (My Blog Spark, Que Rica Vida, Feeding Dreams); General Motors (Buick and OnStar); McDonald's; and Kellogg's.

It's definitely Super Bowl weekend, folks. Warren Sapp was arrested for a domestic violence incident that allegedly occurred at the Shore Club on Miami Beach.
Michael Irvin…Warren Sapp… Are these indeed cases of men behaving badly or what? For sure, either they or the women they've been involved with need to select better partners.
It's Super Bowl Eve; which current or former NFL player will be next? Oh yeah, unlike Irvin; Sapp has been removed from sports analyst duties until an investigation is completed.

With a struggling economy, former Mayor Alex Daoud’s Tell-All book “Sins of South Beach” could give Miami’s economy a boost. Cinepro Pictures/Philippe Martinez Productions has acquired the rights to film a feature length production based on the controversial book.
Production is expected to start in September of 2010 with plans to have most of the filming take place in Miami Beach creating an opportunity to employ many local residents and local actors, and will no doubt generate significant revenue for the City of Miami Beach.
Martinez, the internationally renowned producer of over 30 films including “Modigliani” starring Andy Garcia, “I Could Never be Your Woman” starring Michelle Pfeiffer and “The Flock” starring Richard Gere, acquired the rights from LionShark Entertainment, a subsidiary of BMax Holdings, which will also serve as executive producers on the project.
“In the book I was instantly struck by not only the enigmatic and contradictory nature of Mayor Daoud, but how the various story lines interconnect during such a pivotal time in one of the world’s great cities,” says Martinez. “Alex was a larger than life personality whose impact on Miami Beach is truly part of America’s history.”
Daoud, three-term mayor of Miami Beach, was a driving force behind the rebirth of the city, but ultimately served time in Federal prison for corruption. “The decadence suggested by the book’s title is what initially drew me to read ‘Sins of South Beach’,” said Ben Rizzo, principal partner of BMax, “but the depth of the story and the incredible real-life characters are the reasons that I immediately knew this would make a magnificent movie.”
Martinez says, ”Daoud tells a story chock-full of sex, drugs, violence, corruption, and murder that ultimately exploded into the transformation of the South Beach that we now know today. Much like Miami Beach itself, Daoud was a study in contrasts: the consummate public servant who routinely took drastic actions to protect and serve citizens, while simultaneously straddling the lines of propriety and legality. But, it’s also very obvious to me that there were many other individuals who were just as corrupt, if not more so, than Alex, and who reaped benefits far beyond that of Mayor Daoud. Therefore, I’m truly excited to bring this riveting story to the screen and fully develop those characters as well.”
Author Alex Daoud says, “The sacrifice, the sufferings and the sorrows of the citizens of Miami Beach during the Mariel crime wave were horrific. Now their stories will be immortalized on the big screen.”

I was totally bummed out about all the rain we've had recently until I saw photos of flooding on South Beach over on the Miami New Times site. Oh, wow. What a mess.
I've been a victim of such flooding and it is very frustrating. Of course what this area experienced pales in comparison to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and other disasters.
Let's just keep the rainy weather and flooding in perspective. We needed the rain and the results could have been worse. No lives were lost that we're aware of and that is a blessing indeed.

Urban Beach Weekend…Black Beach Weekend…Hip Hop Weekend…Memorial Day Weekend. Call it what you like; there are hundreds of thousands of young black people on South Beach this weekend. That translates to millions of dollars spent for an unofficial festival not really welcomed by Miami Beach officials. Hmmm….
It also translates to lots of scantily clad females, guys with cameras and styling and profiling in customized vehicles. I don't begrudge any of that because it's all a part of being young during these days and times. The paint jobs on those vehicles are sometimes mind-blowingly creative and let's not talk about the hydraulics --- awesome! Some of my young sisters could show a little more class in their attire though. There is a difference between sexy and skanky. I'm just saying.
Some Miami Beach residents and businesses vacate the place during this weekend. Too many people…way too much traffic. Of course, law enforcement will be on the scene. Let's hope everyone behaves themselves and stays safe. Leave the guns and Jerry Springer Show fights at home, please.
Of course, the visitors will be on the lookout for celebrities that we see here all the time. Whatever the reason, news reports indicate hotels are booked at 92%; that's definitely welcome during this…uh…recession. What recession?
One more thing, can we try to remember the reason for this weekend and honor the service men and women who served this nation and gave their lives? Peace - Light- Love.

If you're thinking about having a beautiful seaside wedding on Miami Beach, think about paying a fee. These new fees go into to effect October 1st. This is clearly a move to help with city budget shortfalls. More local fees may be in our future.
