Reflections on Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Trinity United Church of Christ

What Kind of Prophet?

Reflections on the Rhetoric of Preaching in Light of Recent News Coverage of Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. and Trinity United Church of Christ

The Rev. John H. Thomas
General Minister and President
United Church of Christ

Over the weekend members of our church and others have been subjected to the relentless airing of two or three brief video clips of sermons by the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ for thirty-six years and, for over half of those years, pastor of Senator Barack Obama and his family. These video clips, and news stories about them, have been served up with frenzied and heated commentary by media personalities expressing shock that such language and sentiments could be uttered from the pulpit.

One is tempted to ask whether these commentators ever listen to the overcharged rhetoric of their own opinion shows. Even more to the point is to wonder whether they have a working knowledge of the history of preaching in the United States from the unrelentingly grim language of New England election day sermons to the fiery rhetoric of the Black church prophetic tradition. Maybe they prefer the false prophets with their happy homilies in Jeremiah who say to the people: "You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you true peace in this place." To which God responds, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name; I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds. . . . By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed,"

(Jeremiah 14.14-15). The Biblical Jeremiah was coarse and provocative. Faithfulness, not respectability was the order of the day then. And now?

What's really going on here? First , it may state the obvious to point out that these television and radio shows have very little interest in Trinity Church or Jeremiah Wright. Those who sifted through hours of sermons searching for a few lurid phrases and those who have aired them repeatedly have only one intention. It is to wound a presidential candidate. In the process a congregation that does exceptional ministry and a pastor who has given his life to shape those ministries is caricatured and demonized. You don't have to be an Obama supporter to be alarmed at this. Will Clinton's United Methodist Church be next? Or McCain's Episcopal Church? Wouldn't we have been just as alarmed had it been Huckabee's Southern Baptist Church, or Romney's Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints?

Many of us would prefer to avoid the stark and startling language Pastor Wright used in these clips. But what was his real crime? He is condemned for using a mild "obscenity" in reference to the United States. This week we mark the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq, a war conceived in deception and prosecuted in foolish arrogance. Nearly four thousand cherished Americans have been killed, countless more wounded, and tens of thousands of Iraqis slaughtered. Where is the real obscenity here? True patriotism requires a degree of self-criticism, even self-judgment that may not always be easy or genteel. Pastor Wright's judgment may be starker and more sweeping than many of us are prepared to accept. But is the soul of our nation served any better by the polite prayers and gentle admonitions that have gone without a real hearing for these five years while the dying and destruction continues?

We might like to think that racism is a thing of the past, that Martin Luther King's harmonious multi-racial vision, articulated in his speech at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 and then struck down by an assassin's bullet in Memphis in 1968, has somehow been resurrected and now reigns throughout the land. Significant progress has been made. A black man is a le! gitimate candidate for President of the United States. A black woman serves as Secretary of State. The accomplishments are profound. But on the gritty streets of Chicago's south side where Trinity has planted itself, race continues to play favorites in failing urban school systems, unresponsive health care systems, crumbling infrastructure, and meager economic development. Are we to pretend all is well because much is, in fact, better than it used to be? Is it racist to name the racial divides that continue to afflict our nation, and to do so loudly? How ironic that a pastor and congregation which, for forty-five years, has cast its lot with a predominantly white denomination, participating fully in its wider church life and contributing generously to it, would be accused of racial exclusion and a failure to reach for racial reconciliation.

The gospel narrative of Palm Sunday's entrance into Jerusalem concludes with the overturning of the money changers' tables in the Temple courtyard. Here wealth and power and greed were challenged for the way the poor were oppressed to the point of exclusion from a share in the religious practices of the Temple. Today we watch as the gap between the obscenely wealthy and the obscenely poor widens. More and more of our neighbors are relegated to minimal health care or to no health care at all. Foreclosures destroy families while unscrupulous lenders seek bailouts from regulators who turned a blind eye to the impending crisis. Should the preacher today respond to this with only a whisper and a sigh?

Is Pastor Wright to be ridiculed and condemned for refusing to play the court prophet, blessing land and sovereign while pledging allegiance to our preoccupation with wealth and our fascination with weapons? In the United Church of Christ we honor diversity. For nearly four centuries we have respected dissent and have struggled to maintain the freedom of the pulpit. Not every pastor in the United Church of Christ will want to share Pastor Wright's rhetoric or his politi! cs. Not every member will rise to shout "Amen!" But I trust we will all struggle in our own way to resist the lure of respectable religion that seeks to displace evangelical faith. For what this nation needs is not so much polite piety as the rough and radical word of the prophet calling us to repentance. And, as we struggle with that ancient calling, I pray we will be shrewd enough to name the hypocrisy of those who decry the mixing of religion and politics in order to serve their own political ends.

Chief Jimmy Brown Hot Talk Host launches MySpace page celebrating 18 years in radio

"I really appreciate the love and support that I have received from the "Hot Talk" listeners during the past years.  Hot Talk listeners are special people." said Chief Jimmy Brown.

By Rose Reeder

MySpace.com, the evermore popular networking site for a gazillion people on the planet has a new member, Chief Jimmy Brown of Hot Talk 105.1 fm. (Clap, clap, clap!!) His website is http://www.myspace.com/chiefjimmybrown. For those not familiar with myspace.com, it is one of several on-line communities used by techies, young people, mega-superstars i.e. Halle Berry, Will Smith, Oprah, Kanye West, Former President Bill Clinton (the Black president), Presidential candidate Barack Obama, International Keynote Speaker James Amps, Nationally Acclaimed Author and Motivational Speaker Lisa Rogers-Cherry etc. use to communicate/market services all over the world. Savvy business people in every arena have a site or are setting one up.

Here is a portion of what the viewer will read on Chief Brown's MySpace page in the section called " About Chief Jimmy Brown" :

Somebody say boom-shacka-lacka -( listeners know this is one of Chief's favorite sayings when he agrees with a comment and or statement )

Talk Show Host

"South Florida's number 1 Arbitron Rated talk show, Hot Talk on Hot 105.1 fm presents its esteemed host, "Chief Jimmy L. Brown".

Every Sunday night at 11:00pm (EST) listeners tune in to the most informative "live" talk show in the South Florida market. Regulars know the all too familiar voice who starts the show sending shout-outs to various people and municipalities throughout South Florida with special shout outs to his mom, Mrs. Ida Mae Brown of Perrine and to his "Barbie Doll" (Chief's wife Michelle Brown) in Davie.

The talk show "Hot Talk" was born out of the rage and frustration that erupted into violence on the streets of Miami in 1989 after a police officer shot and killed a motorcyclist, touching off days of civil unrest infamously known as the McDuffie riots.  Brown was part of the army of officers who swept through Miami's Black community, arresting looters and bottle-throwers"…….

To the left of the About Chief Jimmy Brown section are pictures.  As one explores the site, there are various sections to read and listen to. Most notably; "book of the week"; "Go back with Chief and reminisce….letter from the Birmingham jail by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr." and soon to be placed on the page the much requested "Willie Lynch letter". As with all of the MySpace pages people who have them can place their picture(s) and other information on other sites.
Programming Producer Missey Bailey was instrumental in galvanizing the experts to put this site together for Chief Brown to pay homage to him.

Having worked both on the air and behind the scenes, Bailey is enjoying her tour of duty with Hot Talk host.  "Chief Jimmie Brown is like a Father figure to me" said Bailey. "Every Sunday he delivers insightful information to our South Florida listeners with a hard core one, two punch".  In the background assisting is Brotha Maze and the intern, Brandon. (You can see their pictures on the site).

As Chief Brown reminisces about the 18 years on the air he said "I really appreciate the love and support that I have received from the "Hot Talk" listeners during the past years.  Hot Talk listeners are special people." Many callers requested more Hot Talk before and after the demise of the People's station.

Chief Brown is encourages listeners/callers to let Phil Michaels-Trueba, Program Director know you want more "Hot Talk" .. His email is [email protected] and  phone number is (305) 567-5692.  Stay tuned for more information about Chief celebrating 18 years on the air and be sure to check out the site http://myspace.com/chiefjimmybrown!

This Christmas: You Can’t Exchange Family, You Just Have to Love Them!

Two months ago I would have told you that Chris Brown was one of the most annoying entertainers around. That's seems a tad cruel but I'm just keeping it real. He was everywhere. The comments equating him to Michael Jackson really did it for me. Anyhoo, I think he was overexposed and rewarded way too early for a neophyte musical career. Well, it seems that young Mr. Brown just may have proven himself in his role in This Christmas. Obviously, his singing talent and appeal to young women are capitalized on to sell this movie and the soundtrack. It works.

The cast seems to click so much so that the interaction seems so real and I could definitely identify with my own family members and many of the characters. Now, don't get it twisted, there's nothing new in this movie. The storyline is predictable but ya know what? It still works. The jokes, one-liners and come backs remind me of any of several family gatherings.

If I could have changed anything, I probably would have one less Soul Train line. While black folks like to have a good time, I just don't recall that much extraneous dancing going on in my household. That being said, I love this movie and I could watch it over and over again.

Regina King is awesome, as usual, Sharon Leal, Loretta Devine are fabulous and video model turned actress Lauren London holds her own. Two of my favorite actors, Delroy Lindo and Idris Elba bring sexy back for me every time.

I also like the way black filmmakers are infusing the value of education and attending a historically-black college or university in their work.

If you want to see a feel good movie with a few twists and turns, you'll enjoy This Christmas. Remember, you can't exchange family.

Michael Baisden’s Beat Down

The sound that you hear is radio talk personality and author Michael Baisden being slammed all over the media. Pick a format --- print, radio, television, internet --- and Baisden's beat down reputation litters the place. It is what it is.

Check out Howard Witt's coverage at the Chicago Tribune and then read Glen Ford's slicing and dicing of Baisden and others over at the Black Agenda Report.

When monies are involved, someone is likely to try something funky. In the case of the Jena 6 and other fundraising initiatives in which Baisden and others profit, it's time for the pimpin' and getting pimped to stop.

"She was the right person to represent our brand," said representatives from Fashion Fair Cosmetics.  "We're proud to have her as one of the newest members of the Fashion Fair family."

Redding News Review Targets Media Outlets, Professionals in Outreach Campaign

ReddingNewsReview.com, a leading up-to-the-minute black news Web portal, has officially launched a campaign aimed specifically at media professionals. The importance of media ownership remains a major part of Redding News Review's platform, but this latest effort seeks to own its place on the bookmark lists and trusted sources amongst all media outlets researching news within the black community for their newscasts, radio and television talk shows, newspaper articles and internet blogs.

"I understand how important it is for a District-based journalist to be plugged in to up-to-the-minute news via the Internet," said Publisher Robert Redding Jr. "Redding News Review aims to help my colleagues in the media stay informed."

The campaign consists of two services:

1. A daily email newsletter showcasing some of Redding News Review's latest content.
2. An affiliate link sharing agreement.

"Often in the busy world of daily journalism, there is little time for reporters to research issues pertinent to the African American community," said Executive Editor Marlene L. Johnson. "This is a bold venture which harkens back to the likes of the late John H. Johnson, publisher of the Ebony Magazine empire. Like Johnson, one has to have a unique vision, then step out on faith and turn that vision into a reality."

That vision comes with a unique strategy. The Web site is also targeting domestically based African and Caribbean-American media. International Editor,
Bruno Gaston, who is born of immigrants from both communities, says this is equally important:

"The African community is clearly demonstrating the importance of media ownership through their television stations and news sites like AfricanPath.com," Gaston said. "Nearly every study of U.S. Census data shows that African immigrants are the most highly educated of all immigrant groups."

Several domestically based African television networks have emerged in recent years. MTV also has launched the Caribbean network, Tempo on Nov. 30, 2005, which currently reaches more than 20 Caribbean viewing markets. Redding News Review aims to use that momentum to direct its readers to more African and Caribbean-American owned media outlets.

"This new medium will fill a vacuum, bringing together insights from the African American and the African and Caribbean communities, thus providing readers with a better world view on issues of the day that affect us all," Johnson said.

"News producers and editors should be paying more attention to the communities that are telling their own story when covering those regions," Gaston said. "We eventually plan on extending this effort to Afro-Latinos."

Media professionals can subscribe to the newsletter or request to partner with ReddingNewsReview.com by sending an email to [email protected].

Redding News Review, which been nominated "Best News Distributor Site" in the Second Annual Black Web Awards competition, is a leading black news Web portal with up-to-the-minute credible, competitive and consistent coverage. It has attracted more than half a million readers a year. Founded in March 2002, Redding News Review's editorial mission is to expose the partisan political nature of government while bringing attention to black issues ignored or buried by mainstream media.

The site, which features links to both mainstream and black publications, has been credited for influencing news coverage by Editor & Publisher, Upscale magazine, Rolling Out, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Baltimore Sun and the Washington Times newspapers. Its content is also heard on XM Satellite Radio and has been seen on the Fox News Channel.

Can Rudy Crew survive Miami politics?

Rudycrew As quietly as it is being kept, The Miami New Times published a scathing article on Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Rudy Crew. The article itself is not nearly as controversial as the newspaper's cover with the phrase that the superintendent "sucks donkey's balls".

Regardless of where you stand on Rudy Crew, that cover was highly disrespectful and inexcusable. Moreover, it served to taint the objectivity of the piece itself. It's likely that the article will strengthen the position of those who support Crew and the same for those that oppose him.

The South Park cartoon reference, "sucks donkey balls" is frequently used by young people. Google the term to see what I mean. Wow, that's another blog post for another time but if that phrase can be so casually used in conversation, we have issues way bigger than Dr. Crew or anyone else in his position.

The nasty fights between Board members will likely exacerbate and continue. Unfortunately, it's also likely the ethnic polarization will become more prevalent in the community and everyone in Miami will suffer. Stay tuned.
